We Will Do What Is Ours to Do

Luke 17:5-10

“Lord, increase our faith,” the apostles say to Jesus. These were the ones who had been following him closely for a good while now, long enough to know him pretty well, long enough to know about some of the dangers of following, too. They were, at this juncture, journeying toward Jerusalem—maybe that’s why they were asking for an increase in their faith. Maybe they felt the pressure building. Who knows what could happen once they reached Jerusalem? Would they be able to be faithful? Any of us would be apt to say: “Lord, increase our faith.”

Don't Be Afraid

Luke 12:22-34

“So I tell you, don’t be afraid, little flock. Don’t worry about your lives….”

Sometimes easier said than done. We so easily fall prey to worry and anxiety. “Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S. with 19.1 million (13.3%) of the adult U.S. population (ages 18-54) affected [healthyplace.com]. And of course many, many more of us are affected by anxiety as we get older. Not to mention all those occasional episodes of free-floating unease and worry that, like a low-grade fever, sap our energy and steal our joy. Personally, I’ve always figured if you’re not, right now, worrying about something, you’re probably not paying enough attention.

Pentecost and the Birth of Community

Wendy Dorsey

Wendy Dorsey5/23/2010

Introduction:Today we celebrate the beginning of the Season of the Church year called Pentecost, which for Christians marks the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Christian church. In my teaching today, I want to focus on what the coming of the Holy Spirit meant for the community of Jesus' disciples then and what being open to the Holy Spirit might mean for us now. At the end, I would like to have time for us to consider a couple of questions to help us discern how we at 8th Day are being called by the Spirit.
