Being present to The Presence in the present moment

Dolores J. Taylor

John 20:22

And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit”.

Genesis 2:7

then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.

Acts 1:8
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Acts 2:17

“‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams;

John 14:17

even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be iyou.
John 17:26

I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

Today I want to speak to you about three things: a prayer from Gordon, Fractals, and the advent of the “here and now”. Some of thoughts will be in left field but hang in there until the end.

Let us start with the scripture.  Today is the first Sunday of advent but the scripture from the lectionary today speaks about the second advent or the second coming.  The last two words are “stay awake” or as the young people say, “stay woke”.  It means to be aware of what is going on around you and in you and with others.  Instead of taking a bird’s eye view of the scripture, I want to use a microscope into the present moment instead of the future. Our future could end suddenly but we have this moment.  Stay awake to the future but in the meantime, stay awake to the present and The Presence.

  1. Gordon’s Prayer

I took the same class from Gordon 3 times.  I am a slow learner and sometimes it is hard to hear or follow what he is saying.  I always felt that he had a special relationship with me but later, I discovered that I was not the only princess on the hill.   Often, he has special messages for me.  I called them DM or direct messages from God.  They were always against my grain.  This particular time I heard him shuffling towards me and I was moving away. He caught up with me and asked the following questions slowly and deliberately: Do you pray for your children? Yes! Do you call out their names? Yes! Do you ask God to let you be to them what you need to be to them in that moment in time?  What? After some grumbling, I tried praying that way with my children and especially in their presence or when they were upset but not talking.  It made a huge difference.  I was able to touch their spirit and actually comfort them.

Why am I telling you this?  Because this is what we need to be and how we need to be with each other.  I cannot love God if I don’t love his people and hear their need to be touched in the spirit.

Let me be to you what you need me to be for you or to you right now in this moment.

  1. Fractals

    1. What are Fractals?
A fractal is a never-ending pattern. Fractals are infinitely complex patterns that are self-similar across different scales. They are created by repeating a simple process over and over in an ongoing feedback loop.

    2. They show up in nature and mathematics.  (share screen)

    3. Why is it important?

      1. Today, I want to suggest that they show up in people.

      2. If allowed the spirit of Christ will continue to produce itself and the presence of Christ in His people.

      3. Not only is there a first advent and a future advent, but is it possible that there may be mini advents because Christ has become a fractals.

  1. Advent “here and now

Let’s apply Gordon’s prayer to the here and now of our encounters.  Looking at this quote.

Quote from Richard Rohr:

  1. Quote from Richard Rohr Falling Upward p 56-67

    1. Concerning The mercy and grace of God, Jesus did not teach that one size fits all but instead that his God adjusts to this vagaries and failures of the moment. This ability to adjust to the human disorder and failure is named God's providence or compassion. Every time God forgives us, God is saying that God’s on rules do not matter as much is the relationship that God wants to create with us! Just a biblical notion of absolute forgiveness, once experience, should be enough to make a stress and seek and love God.

    2. Understanding this quote means that if God adjusts His mercy and compassion accorder to present moment, we should too, especially with each other and making.  Each moment is scared and holy if we are present, fully engaged.   We touch God when we touch the spirit of our brother.   How can we love God if we don’t love each other?  Love is adjusting to the moment with compassion and praying and living Gordon’s prayer.

    3. Do you remember the research confirming that babies needing to be touched to thrive and, in some cases, survive? The need for touch to satisfy our skin hunger is real. The same is true with our spirit.  We need to touch the spirit of God and we do that when we touch the spirit of God in our brother.   Emanual, God with Us truly becomes God with us.  The Spirit thrives when it is touched by another.  It is a warm and comforting blanket.

    4. You can provide and be that space of humility and acceptance with Gordon’s prayer.

The second coming is a fractal of the first Advent which replicates itself in you when you bring the Spirit of Christ’s Presence to another by being what they need you to be for them and to them at that point in time.  Christ is reproducing in you His Presence.  The moment is sacred and holy.  This is what it means to stay awake.  This is what it means to stay woke.  This means to be aware and as Richard Rohr say have the ability to adjust to the vagaries and failures of the moment showing God’s compassion by just being present. Allowing my spirit to touch and nurture your spirit.

How can we truly be present?  A few suggestions would include:

Closing: Being present

Eyeballs-look person in the eye

Focus on the “here and now”

  1. Clear out baggage from the past

  2. Live in the holiness of the moment

  3. Being fully available

  4. Being fully engaged

  1. Being present might include Forgiveness, which is an act of grace and gift from God.  If you cannot forgive it all, just forgive for the moment so you can be present.

  2. Living in the present moment means no regrets

  3. Jesus promised to be with us until the end not to fix it: To Be Present (I will be with you to the end)

  4. Even Christ’s name Emanuel means God With Us: inside and out (in Him we live and have our being)

So, as you encounter your brother, allow your spirit to be a warm blanket of compassion and love.  Let the pilot light of Christ spirit breath the spirit into your encounters with others.  Be present to the Presence.  Bring the Breath of God, The Spirit of Christ and the Mind of Christ to each encounter to be what that person needs you to be for them at that time, in the here and now.
