Beliefs

Eighth Day, along with the other former Church of the Saviour communities, considers itself a part of the Christian church universal.  We are an ecumenical church, with members from many different expressions of the Christian church.  We are made up of people from Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Mennonite, Presbyterian and other backgrounds.  We value the gifts that the many Christian traditions have to offer.  We believe that an openness to these different streams of Christianity allows us a richer faith.

The commitment each person makes when becoming a covenant member of Eighth Day reflects the belief that the love of God - Creator, Savior, Sanctifier - calls each one of us to a life of self and corporate giving to our world.  We believe that the way to a closer union with God is two fold: a journey inward of spiritual disciplines and growth; and a journey outward of service to and with others - especially those at the margins of society.  We believe that it is in community with others that we can truly find God, grow spiritually, and become more compassionate persons.

In keeping with the belief in the "priesthood of all believers" Eighth Day decided not to have a paid pastor.  Instead, each year Eighth Day selects the community's leadership.  In addition, we rotate the task of preaching among the membership and the larger worshipping community (many of whom are not covenant members).

The life of the community is lived out in mission groups.   Mission groups consist of at least two members who have responded to a particular call.  Each mission group meets weekly for study, prayer and working with member's inward and outward missions.  (See "Missions" link for the current mission groups and nonprofits connected with the church).

Sunday worship brings everyone - mission group members and other community members - together to worship God.  There are also "School of Christian Living" classes and support groups for people not ready or able to make the full "covenant membership" commitment.
